Ford Repair: own an 89 E-150 with a 302..., mileage engine, poor mileage

Question
own an 89 E-150 with a 302 fuel injected engine. It has the following symptoms:

1.   Low mileage
2.   Running rich
3.   No power until the RPMs get higher
4.   Exhaust smells rich
5.   Plugs are black

Except for poor mileage engine runs fine when RPMs are kept steady.

I replaced the ignition wires, the distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs and the oxygen sensor. Timing is correct; spark is thick and blue white.

Intermittent Check Engine light when stopped at traffic light. Code is 42 EGO indicates system rich..

I am thinking MAP or TPS; can they be checked with a VOM or DVM?

OR am I barking up the wrong tree?

Regards
Sal

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
The MAP sensor would be my starting point.........check the vacuum line going to it......look for cracks, make sure it's connected. To test the sensor it self you'll need a Hz meter....I would suggest that you go to the local parts store and see IF the have a specific MAP tester you can rent.
