Ford Repair: A/C Compressor, ac field, field coil

Question
Hi,
I have a 1997 Ford Explorer. It has a 5.0 and an automatic transmission. The a/c has gone out. The fan is running but it blows hot air. The freon was checked and it is full and holding pressure. I checked the compressor and the clutch is not engaging when the a/c is turned on. I manually turned the pulley and it turns freely. I also checked the temperature control and it seems to be functioning normally. Any ideas? I am guessing the clutch could be bad but I am not sure.  Thanks.

Brian

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
What I would suggest you do is remove the electrical connector from the AC field coil and check for continuity in the component. If it is electrically open, it will need to be replaced. Also, while it is unplugged.......check for voltage at the connector with a 12v test light. If none is present......it's most likely a switch...... high/low pressure switch, that is causing the problem.
