Ford Repair: fuel pump, proper diagnosis, taures

Question
Hi Erik,  my quwstion is regarding my 2001 taures sel,v6 auto, air,pw,p seats,. Erik this veh. has 21700, miles on it, (original) the veh. at times would not start, this only occured after the veh had come to operating temp, it would act like it is flooded, spit and sputter then quit, now no matter how many times you try to start it, it would not start, but if we wait 15 mins and then try it, it would start.  The dealership replace the power module and the relay first for 170.00 and then called me to tell me they found a service bulletin from Ford Motors stating that the problem us the fuel pump and the other parts had to be replaced anyway when the pump was replaced. of course the fuel pump cost 250.00 now the bill is up to 501.00 with the labor.  I feel that the fuel pump was defective and should be covered under the manufatures warranty, these things are made to go many more miles than 20,000 i hope.  The dealer says sorry out of warranty,
Ford says sorry,  Was this aproper diagnose and to your knowledge is this a premature break down of the system with only 20,000 miles on it.  (by the way it hasn't acted up since the repair so i am ssuming ithe problem has been solved

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
I've seen fuel pumps that were bad from the get go, right out of the box. Others have lasted beyond the life of the vehicle. It's difficult to say. As far as being a proper diagnosis.........IF the problem is fixed and they gave it back to you fixed.....I would say it is. If it was a trial and error........complain!
