Ford Repair: timming, interference engine, torque convertor

Question
ok i own a 97 ford escort the car broke down about 5 weeks ago. it makes a very loud knocking noise. all though the engine does not knock while turning over. it takes about 10 15 seconds to start, and when it does. it starts to knock very loudly. it then stalls out after about 10 seconds. i think that the timing belt might have slipped 1 or 2 teeth do you think my theory is correct. if so how much would it cost to replace it.
thank you for your time CHRIS BROWNING

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
I wouldn't agree....your timing belt is constant and the engine would knock as soon as it is turned over if the belt slipped and was loose....also IF it was an interference engine........which it isn't. I would check the basics.......OIL level, nuts for the torque convertor, loose harmonic balancer bolt.
Hope this helps,
Erik
