Ford Repair: 03 Taurus Tranny, neutral safety switch, lamp bulbs

Question
I will check the brake interlock motor this evening, granted I figure out where it is and what it looks like. As far as the wires , i've only looked at the wires from the stop lamp bulbs to the bottom of the trunk and the wires from the brake switch up into the dash where it connects up with other wires. They look ok ( no cuts or frays). How should I inspect the brake switch and interlock motor???-------------------------

Ok, this evening I went home and pulled both stop lamp bulbs and then cranked the car. It shifted into reverse and drive just fine.I drove around the block and then came back to park. I then shut the car off and put both bulbs back in and then disconnected the brake  on/off switch on the brake pedal. I cranked the car and put it into reverse , backed up a foot and then shifted it into drive then back to park. I then pushed down the brake pedal to try the sequence again but the shifter (column) wouln't move. I check the fuse for the stop lamp and it had blown again. Any other suggestions????-------------------------

My 03 taurus SES won't shift out of park when I start it up. I can get it to shift into drive by doing the e-brake/nuetral method. I have checked the fuses and the car keeps blowing the fuse for the stop lamps. Is this a sign that the nuetral safety switch is bad. If so what is the procedure to fix it???

Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
I would go jumping the gun and replace the neutral safety switch. It sounds like it is more the shift interlock actuator motor that has died or shorted. I would also remove the bulbs from the brakes and replace the fuse. Try it again with out the lamps in. Then if the fuse blows, check the brake pedal switch (on the brake pedal) and then the shift interlock motor.
Hope this helps,
Erik

The easiest way to check the brake pedal switch is to replace it.......BUT, you can use an Ohm meter. There should be continuity with the switch depressed and it should be open when released. As far as the shit lock...is this a column or floor shift model?
