Ford Repair: Mustang Wont Start, digital scanner, shopping spree

Question
I own a 1990 DPS 5.0L Mustang. The other day I was running some errands and the engine died. I towed it home. The engine starter turns the engine without any problems. I then put my digital scanner to see if I had any codes. No codes were detected. When the key is put in the on position, I can hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds and then stop. With the help of a friend, I checked the coil by grounding it and there was not any spark. I replace the coil and I still don't see any spark when grounding the coil.

Need your advice on what to check. Don't want to go on a shopping spree and buying all the electrical components if there is a better way to troubleshoot the problem and fix it.

Thank you for your time and effort!

James Moreno

Answer
James-

If you're not getting any spark at the coil, chances are your ignition control module has gone bad.  Since that provides spark to the coil and the coil provides spark to the distributor, the ignition control module is the first place I'd check.  Hope this helps.
