Ford Repair: cooling fan, ford escort wagon, installing a thermostat

I have a 1997 Ford Escort. Lately the cooling fan runs about 80% of the time.
I replaced the temp. sensor and it still runs excessively. It doesn't shut off when I disconnect the sensor, or turn on all the time when I turn on the air conditioner. It seems to have a mind of it's own. It's never overheated on me. Are there any other sensors in the circuit? There are no codes that come up on the computer scan. It does this hot or cold. Any ideas would be appreciated.

         Thanks,

Hello and thanks for the question I'll try to help.
Please give more details about the vehicle....auto or manual trans, engine size.....when this problem started.
Thanks,
Erik

More info: 1997 Ford Escort Wagon 2.0 liter, 118k. Problem started 1 month ago. Noticed the electric fan was running about 80% of the time for no apparent reason. Was not using the defroster. It will run hot or cold.
Replaced temp sensor, no change. It's never overheated. It has a automatic trans. I've driven it 40K. miles prior to this problem. Was thinking about installing a thermostat. It also doesn't turn on immediately when I switch on the air contitioner but seems to cycle on and off for no apparent reason. That about all I know.

Hello and thanks for the reply...I'll try to help.
I would suggest that you DO replace the thermostat. What you might also want to do is locate the reciever/dryer for the AC system and disconnect the hi/low pressure cut off switch for it. See if this allows the cooling fan to "act" in a normal way. The chances that the switch has gone bad, are good. This switch can cause the cooling fan to run cntinuously.
Hope this helps,
Erik
