Ford Repair: Check Engine Light, ford explorer xlt, thick film ignition

Question
I have a 1994 Ford Explorer XLT-4wd, 111000 miles. The check engine light has come on. The only indication of a problem is when the vehicle is cold there seems to be a slight hesitation on acceleration. The only scan code is a 214, cylinder identification (CID) sensor - circuit failure. I have cleared the code from the computer and it returns upon restarting the vehicle. What does the CID system consist of? What sensors should I be testing? Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hello and thanks for the question...I'll try to help.
The CID system, is incorporated in the PCM, TFI (Thick Film Ignition) module. What I would start checking is for loose/corroded connections. Also, since you were able to clear the codes, I am assuming that you have access to a scan tool. Removing the battery cable does not clear the codes stored. Use the scan tool and run an engine running test as well as a key on engine off test. Please let me know what you come up with. Also, please give more detailed information about your vehicle.
Thanks,
Erik
