Question
I have a 66 ford mustang that needs work,iv been told that it needs an engine rebuild. how do you know exactly if it needs it or if it needs an engine flush? Also how much would it normally cost? i also have a damaged fly wheel, some of the teeth are chipped off, would replacing that be included with the engine rebuild. Where should i take it to be looked at? a place that specializes in classic cars or will any shop do. do you know any places in austin tx.

Without some sort of catastrophic engine failure, there's really only experience to tell you that an engine needs a rebuild.  There's no sort of benchmark test, really.  The rebuild cost will vary on what's included, but I wouldn't expect to pay more than $400-$500 for the parts.  You'll also have to remember to factor in the cost of machining the engine block, which will also vary depending on the motor.  All in all I'd say on the low end you'd be looking at around $600 and on the high end $800.  Flywheels are not included in any rebuild kit I've ever seen, but I'm sure whoever is doing the work would install one for you.  As for where to take it...this is a pretty simple job so I'd be confident that most engine rebuild shops could get it done right.  You might check around your area and see if anyone has had good or bad experiences with a particular shop.  Hope this helps.
