Ford Repair: 1998 Ford stereo radio-CD Player, ball point pens, audio compact discs

Question
I have an in-dash cd player included in the 1998 Ford Explorer radio.  It plays pre-recorded cd's fine.  It also plays home-recorded cd's fine until it plays for about 45 minutes (or cut 10 or 11) on the CD.  Then it immediately starts to skip.  It seems heat may have something to do with it, as when it's not used for a few minutes, it's fine again.  However, it doesn't skip at all on pre-recorded CD's.  Big puzzle.  Would appreciate some help.

Thanks!

Ron

Answer
This infomation is from a Explorer Owners Manual:

CD units are designed to play commercially pressed 12 cm (4.75 in) audio compact discs only. Due to technical incompatibility, certain recordable and re-recordable compact discs may not function correctly when used in Ford CD players.  Irregular shaped CDs, CDs with a scratch protection film attached, and CDs with homemade paper (adhesive) labels should not be inserted into the CD player. The label may peel and cause the CD to become jammed. It is recommended that homemade CDs be identified with permanent felt tip marker rather than adhesive labels. Ball point pens may damage CDs. Please contact
your dealer for further information.

I have three Ford vehicles myself, and they all do this intermittently.

Sorry I don't have better news,

Dave
