Ford Repair: Loud screeching noise, oxygen sensor, ford probe

Question
I have a 1996 Ford Probe 2.0. a few months ago i got the oxygen sensor, ignition wires and axles repaired.  Now, when I start my car after it has been sitting for a while it makes a VERY LOUD screeching noise.  sometimes the noise lasts for a few seconds, other times it lasts until i drive a few feet.  Just tonight it started making the noise when i was sitting in park at a drive-thru. When i put the car in drive and stepped on the gas the noise got louder and then stopped.  does this sound like some sort of belt problem? and if so about how much would it cost to get it fixed? any information would help, I am extremely worried because i have no real knowledge of cars and am a student so have no real cash either! Please help!

Answer
From your description, I would guess that your engine belts are slipping.  They may be able to be tightened, but it may be time to replace them. There are two belts on the engine, I would replace them both at once. At a Dealership, I would guess that the belts cost between 30-50 each, and labor to be 1.0-1.5 (approx. $76-$117). I would call around to get the best price.  You can continue to drive the vehicle, but the noise will get worse.

I hope this helps,
Dave
