Ford Repair: ignition systems, vacuum leaks, 1979 ford bronco

Question
I have a 1979 Ford Bronco with a 400 v-8. During the late 70's with the environmental awareness taking hold I believe Ford built this engine to burn cooler than previous years engines. Going down the road I can smell unburnt fuel from the exhaust (what i think is alot of unburnt fuel) Would a hotter burning high performance ignition system help fix this? How much might this help the performance of the engine? I have taken ALL of the emmision control devices off of the vehicle, running true dual exhaust with flowmasters, original 2bbl carb.

Answer
Matt:

I hotter ignition may help to mask the unburnt fuel from the exhaust but the problem is probably in the carb.  It sounds as if the engine is being force fed fuel causing a rich condition.  Also check for vacuum leaks.

Hope this helps
