Ford Repair: 91 Ford Escort Dimmer Switch, high beams, low beams

Question
My highbeams started shorting out when I would switch them on, sometimes I would have to flip it a couple of times.  Now I only have dim, the headlights go completely out when I try to go to highbeams.  When I pull the lever towards me the high beams come on as long as I hold the lever, so I know the it is not in the headlights, themselves. How do I fix this problem?  I am having problems finding it in the Chilton book.
Thanks

Answer
I would guess that the Headlight Dimmer Switch (a.k.a. Multi-function Switch) is bad a needs replacing.  The Low-beams should go off when the High-beams are turned on.  Pulling the lever back is for "Flash-to-Pass". The Low-beams stay on when using "Flash-to-Pass", and the High-beams should turn on when pulled and off when released.

I hope this helps,
Dave
