Ford Repair: big block runs bad, vacuum leaks, carbureator

Question
I have a 71' T-Bird, with a 429ci thunderjet. my folks bought it new and recently gave it to me. it has 57 thou's origl miles on it and always been gararged, all previous maint. was done at a ford dealership,( wished I could afford that) anyway it started to run rough,so time for a tune up. my friend offered to do this, for favors I had done for him, when he returned it he said it would not idle or run right. he had replaced,plugs.wires.cap.rotor,points,cond's and adj carb.,checked timing. I checked his work, and it sounded like crossed wires, checked firing orderand timing, reset poits, and found and fixed three vacuum leaks, vacuum now at 17-18. when started(cold)it loads up and dies,on restart when It fires,up you have to keep rpm's up until it warms up or it load ups&dies and be real hard to start and even backfires up through the carb. rebuilt carb and still the same!HELP!

Answer
Mr. Murrell,

First, you have a carburetor problem. It is burning too rich. I would go to Auto Zone, Advanced Auto, Napa or some other reputable automotive supply store and purchase a carbureator rebuild kit for your particular model carb. If it is back firing, it sounds like you may also have a timing problem. It should be 8 degrees before top dead center, but this is off the top of my head. I f you would like me to look this up for you  to be exact, please contact me again. I hope that this helps and if you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me again. Good luck.
