Ford Repair: I need advice about my automatic transmission, please., ford explorer xlt, automatic transmission fluid

Question
Here's the short of the story.  In May 2004, I purchased a used, one owner 2001 Ford Explorer XLT.  When I check the ATF before buying it, it looked a little orange but did not smell burned.  On Friday, I took it to the local Cottman center to have the ATF fluid changed by dropping the pan, and a filter change.  THe Cottman guys said the fluid looked bad, and although there were no drivability problems, they were reluctant to change it, saying that doing so could make a small problem worse- sort of like "stirring up the pot".  I took it back to the used car dealer (very reputable guys, good mechanics) and told them what Cottman had said.  They drove the truck and checked the fluid- they said it drove fine, and that the fluid looked old, but nothing to worry about.  What do you think?  Is it safe to change the fluid?  Am I brewing trouble?  I have 700 miles left on the warranty- should I call them?
Thanks, Matt

Answer
Matt-

There are problems that can be associated with changing automatic transmission fluid if it hasn;t been done in a long time.  If it's left too long without a fluid change, a sort of varnish can develop around the bands and seals.  Since transmission fluid has detergent in it to clean gears and seals, it can clean off this varnish which may or may not be stopping leaks.  It's really a 50/50 shot.  If it were me, I would have the fluid changed and hope for the best.  If the worst happens, it will most likely do so within the 700 miles you have left on your warranty.  Hope this helps.
