Ford Repair: 94 Ford Explorer Dies, computer module, ford explorer

Question
Steve: I have already asked this question of another "allexpert" volunteer a month ago & still no response. Here goes:Your question was
"I recently purchased a '94 Ford Explorer Ltd. from a college buddy of mine. He advised me, prior to the purchase, that he was aware of only one problem with the vehicle. On occasion, and while driving at no particular speed, the engine would abruptly cut off. He took the auto to a local dealer, and the computer module was replaced. He did not experience the problem after the repair. However, in the past 3 months, I have had the same situation occur approx. 10 times. Again, it shuts down at varying speeds, but the lights continue to operate properly. I will try to restart the vehicle, it will fire, sputter and then choke out. After waiting a minute or two between 3 or 4 attempts, the vehicle will start normally, and drives just fine. Any ideas or questions? Thanks, Bill C.

Answer
Bill-

I highly doubt it's a problem with the computer itself...and probably wasn't to begin with.  Maybe one in every 250,000 ECUs need replacing.  My guess is that it's either a problem with one of the sensors (likely) or a problem with a wiring harness (not so likely).  It may also be a problem in the ignition somewhere.  It's hard to say without seeing the car firsthand.  I can tell you that you'll probably have to have a shop look at it and pull trouble codes (if there are any).  If they tell you they want to put another computer in it, run.  The chance of one car having 2 bad computers has to be one in a few million.  Hope this helps.
