Ford Repair: Boss 302 carb/ignition quandries, boss 302 mustang, pony carburetors

Question
Hello sir.

I have a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang that has been in storage for many, many, years. The engine is completely stock.

I sent the Holley carb to Pony Carburetors for a rebuild as it was completely gunked up. I also removed the fuel tank & cleaned & resealed it as well as a new sending unit.

Carb is back on the car--it runs at idle very well. Under light acceleration its still good & crisp. On heavy acceleration---it bogs down badly even before the secondaries open. Gets even worse when the secondaries do open.

Pony Carbs says it must be an ignition problem. I put new points(dual point),condensers, wires, plugs, and coil. The vacuum advance seems to be working fine too.

Still bogs...no change from before. The fellas at Pony Carbs say the carb is adjusted fine and the overall condition of engine is bad. Not true. Engine is solid & tight. The carb is sure pretty after the rebuild but I'm almost convinced its still my problem. Anything I'm missing?

Any ideas?

Thanks.Mark Hulsebus

Answer
MARK

i agree with you.it sounds like a carb problem.i would check the air fuel mixture.adjust thr screw a turn at a time then try it.the only other problem is accelerator pump in carb is bad or the float is set wrong .congrats on a great car.i own a few mustangs but not a boss.good luck.
