Honda Repair: Honda 1989 Accord, expert decision, racv

Question
Hi there,
I have a lovely 1989 Honda Accord, Auto, 4 cylinder.
It broke down the other day and I had it towed. I was advised by the RACV that the problem was the distributor, it wasn't 'sparking'.
I have had the problem previously when the car would turn over but not start. I thought it may have been a blocked fuel line but have been advised otherwise that is definitely is the distributor.
If it is the distributor, then does it need to to be replaced? I am very conscious of being over-charged by a mechanic and if it just needs a service or clean then I would like to know.

The car runs fine otherwise and i have recently had the ignition replaced. Previous to the tow I have had trouble with it starting, but recently it cut out completely, I still had the radio, lights etc working. The engine just cut out while it was idling at the lights.

I hope this gives enough info to make your expert decision.
Thanks for your help

Answer
Lynda, no spark = distributor or ignitor. And yes, the distributor should be replaced. But, instead of the mechanic purchasing the part and overcharging you, why don't you purchase the unit yourself. These distributors cost around $180 new (remanufactured).

Also when the unit is installed the timing and idle should be properly set/adjusted.
