Honda Repair: 1995 Honda Accord noise upon acceleration - not the muffler, intermediate skill level, honda accord

Question
QUESTION: Hello Travis, my 1995 Honda Accord, V6, 3.8 engine, gets about 22 mpg. Lately, upon acceleration, especially on hills and turning right or left, there is a humming noise that sounds a bit like a vibration. I have also noticed some kind of click when I press the gas pedal. What could this be and is it expensive to repair? Can it be fixed by my husband who has fixed many, many cars, or must it go into a shop?

ANSWER: Kathy, can you provide me with more specific details than, "upon acceleration, especially on hills and turning right or left, there is a humming noise that sounds a bit like a vibration." Like where is the noise coming from? The front of the vehicle or the rear? Which side of the vehicle? Or is it coming from the center. Due you hear the sound or feel the sound or both? Details, details, details...

Most of the minor repairs made to these Honda's can be done at a novice to intermediate skill level. And as you work on these vehicles more and more you will start to get an understanding of how they were put together. So i have no doubt your husband can repair this vehicle.

Let me know as many specific details as you can about this vehicle and what it is doing exactly. Even the most minor detail can help. Let me know in a follow-up question please...

QUESTION: Well Travis, I think the sound is in the front, middle but it is really hard to tell.  I do not feel anything.  If you ever put paper over a comb & blew on it as a kid, then that would be the closest sound to what I hear. It can be quite loud.  Also, when I went home for lunch and really paid attention, I noticed that once I am moving along for awhile, the noise disappears or is very slight upon acceleration. This is all I can relate. I guess if others haven't reported the same problem, I cannot expect you to know what it is.  Thanks, Kathy

Answer
Kathy, I would suspect that this is a drivetrain problem. Check the fluid in the transmission or flush and replace the fluid. Only use Honda ATF if you have an automatic. You also need to lift the vehicle and visually inspect all of the drivetrain components. CV axles specifically. Start here.
