Honda Repair: 1992 Honda Accord Ex, Transmission, Honda

Question
I have a 1992 honda accord ex with 201,000 miles usually it runs fine, the check engine light comes on the goes off immediatly, recently the check engine light will not go off after i have driven the car and the car will not start, after 30 minutes or so the check engine light will then go off, the car starts but then the D4 light blinks, and the car has trouble shifting. What the heck could it be>?

Answer
Rebekah, the D4 light flashing like that is due to a "check transmission" code it is throwing. Inspect the Transmission properly. Verify proper fluid level and clarity of fluid. Rub your fingers back and forth, after wiping the excess from the end of the dip stick. Is there metal shavings? Are they visible? Is it gritty? Does it smell burnt? If these are present I would replace the transmission fluid or flush the system. This will get you by for a while. Have the check engine codes examined by a professional. (Not Autozone or Schuck's. I know its free but a 16yo kid is not going to help me at all. And they need an OBD-1 scanner as well.) A dealer is where i would recommend taking the vehicle. Why? They are going to diagnose the problem and give you an honest answer. Cost? Not that much for a code diagnosis and an hour of your time. (The independent shop down the street or AAMCO not a good idea. They will assume the Transmission or Torque converter is bad and needs to be replaced. That is over $1000.) This could be a small issue like 1 of the 2 solenoids going bad - cheap fix. Worst case scenario Transmission or Torque Converter - $1000 to $1500. 201K is alot of miles. Has the Transmission been serviced lately? Ever? LOL i hope at least in the last 50K miles you have driven the vehicle. Hope this helps...
