Honda Repair: 89 Honda Accord idling fast, dr jekyl and mr hyde, 89 honda accord

Question
QUESTION: My '89 Honda Accord sometimes runs at over 3000 rpm. I will be sitting there at a stop sign and it just keeps going(not idling). Usually when it is running this high I can keep my foot on the brake and it will stop but recently I had to use both feet or else it would have kept inching along. It does not matter if I have just started it or if it's been on the road for 40 miles, I will be driving along and it will just decide to go. It will be running at over 2000 rpm and if I'm going uphill it'll hit 60 mph, if I'm going downhill 70. (If I don't touch the brakes). I won't be touching the gas at all. Sometimes if you tap the gas the rpm will go back down but not always and not for very long. About half the time the car is perfectly normal. Just barely touch the brake at stop signs, touch the gas to go, etc; an otherwise well running car. It's like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. When it's cold in the morning the engine will idle so low it will cut off, I have to keep on the gas until it warms up. It used to idle up to 4,000 rpm but I had my mechanic to turn it down. But I somehow think that it is not the root of the problem.

ANSWER: 89 was transfer year is yours fuel injected or does it have a carberator?

QUESTION: carberator

Answer
sounds like you have choke sticking at times enough to keep it up on its fast idle cam on the carb I would recommened taking it to someone who knows about these carbs and have them take a look at it because these are very difficult to adjust if you have no experience with them
