Question
QUESTION: I have a 1991 miata and new to replace my engine, I cant find a decent used one in my area...so..what models and years of mazdas had the same engine as my 1991? if any ?

ANSWER: 90-93 are the only direct fit engines.  94-97 can be fitted however a kit is required and not everything required comes in the kit.  What is wrong with your engine?

QUESTION: not fully sure what is wrong with the engine i have...i just no its garbage as part of the bottom end is sticking out a baseball size hole on the side of the block.....
what other models would have the same engine as my miata?  I may have better luck buying a whole car than continuing my search for just the motor...

Answer
Yeah, that motor is scrap.  Connecting rod failure.  1.6 liter motors used are in rare supply that's not to say they can't be found though.  They were used from 1990 thru 1993 only then the 1.8 liter replaced it in subsequent year models.  Again a 94-97 motor can be retrofitted with a kit and some intake pipe work using the fuel system, computer and ignition system from your year model.  The 1.8 liter is considerably more available used, though no longer cheap with reasonable mileage on them.
