Honda Repair: INTERMITENT HARD START, honda accord ex, fuel pumps

Question
I have a 90 Honda accord EX,Automatic trans with 180k miles on it. Recently I do have problems with it stalling while driving below 20MPH. When it stalls out, and I crank a couple of times,it starts out just good as if there was no problem. But the new stunt it plays on me now is that when it stalls out, I gives me a hard start, usually after a long drive. I thought it was the fuel pump, injectors and maybe clogged fuel filter, so i got all that changed. But the problem wont go away. I looked under the dashboard where the main relay and fuel relay are, but cant really understand a thing about electrical part of the car. So is this symptoms that of a bad ignition coil....distributor....or igniter....pls help.

Answer
If you had a problem with a coil or ignitor, the engine usually will not start back up. Once they burn out, they burn out & the engine is dead until they get replaced. On rare occasions, I've had some that were starting to fail, so, if you haven't ever had them replaced in 17 years it won't hurt to replaced them. The biggest problem with these that I see everyday is PGM-FI main relays. This main relay basically controls switched battery voltage to the fuel pump. Fuel pumps & injectors aren't very common to go out on this model. If the solder connections in the main relay crack, then the fuel pump will not get power to operate. This is the first thing that should be checked. The main relay is under the driverside dash, beside the steering column. It is a small, black relay about 3 inches long. You have to remove the 2 bolts holding the silver cruise control unit out of the way to get to it. Once you are there, you should be able to go to any parts store to pick on up.
