Honda Repair: Temp gauge/speedometer, vehicle speed sensor, gauge speedometer


Question
I have a manual 1988 honda civic lx, that I love, might I add, but for functionality and safety purposes, I have two concerns. One, when I got the car, the speedometer didn't work. It hasn't to this day, and I can find no loose wires, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. Location and type(electronic or mechanical) would be great info.

Second, When I got the car, the thermal gauge worked fine. I had a hose blow at a pressure point and when I cut the hose before the hole and reattached it, I must have knocked something loose, because the temp sensor doesn't register heat at all. Maybe I knocked a wire loose in the process. Again, location of sensor would be wonderful information.

Michale , sounds like your vss(vehicle speed sensor is bad)You may want to replace the thermostat located on top where the fat hose goes into the block.Go to this website and type in the same question and it should bring up a photo and also give other info of what could be wrong besides what I already mentioned.autorepair.about.com
