Honda Repair: 1992 Honda Accord check engine light, honda accord, filter air

The check engine light came on when car started today, although car ran OK.  Engine does not sound smooth but car runs OK. After stopping and sitting 1/2 hour the light did not come on, but car stalled at a light.  When I restarted the car, the check engine light came on again and stayed on till I drove to garage, but the car ran OK.   I took it to chain type garage and they wanted $850 to replace entire distributor, general tune up stuff like wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter.  This seems excessive. What do you recommend to start with.

with a engine light its hard to tell, Pull the carpet from the passengers side and turn the ignition on and watch the ECU for a red blinking light, when it starts blinking write back how many times it blinks. Then i can tell you exactly whats wrong with it.
