Honda Repair: Shift Solenoid?, intake hose, honda accord

Question
The original code that caused the car to be towed in was P0973.  Scary stuff because the "D" was flashing and the "N" was steady on at the same time.  They replaced the shift solenoid.  When the car was picked up the mil still on, now with code P0171.  They reset the light about 4 times.  Then all the stories began on how many complaints honda have had (the number changed from 4 to 30 in 2 days).  First they said that I used cheap gas, then the story evolved to a new gas blend that is becoming available.  We were directed to a website about E85, but that does not seem to have much to do with this and, in any case, it is not available in NJ.

Hello,
I have a honda accord 2005 EX 4 cyl and the malfunctioning light keeps turning on.  I took my car to the dealer 9 days ago because while I was driving, the engine light tuned on, and even I had the car on drive, it automatically switch to neutral (and the drive light started blinking).  They said it was a shift solenoid and that the car was fixed.  After taking the car with me, the engine light keeps turning on.  They have reseted the light 4 times already and they keep telling me that the problem is that I put cheap gas on my car.  I know that's not true.  Can you recommend any other possibility for this problem (specially after they fixed the shift solenoid)?

Thanks,
Marie

What kind of code are they telling you that keeps coming up?

Answer
I for one have never had to diagnose a p0171 fuel system lean on an 05 yet which tells me that someone doesn't or can't diagnose when thought is required.  One thing to check that we have found.  Look under the hood at where the air filter box is (drivers side) and follow the black intake hose that runs to the engine.  On the back side of that hose is a small box that attached to that intake hose.  We have had the oil change guys check the air filter and pull that box loose from the intake hose and cause that code.  Make sure that box is properly pushed into the holes in the intake hose.  It also makes a sucking sound from a vacuum leak if that box is not properly attached.  Other than that, someone may have to diagnose a little better.
