Honda Repair: Honda Civic DX 2000, platinum plugs, honda civic dx

Question
Thanks for the quick response.  Where about are these parts located?  I've been told that they can be removed and checked to see if they're working, is that so?  Thank You.

My girlfriends 2000 Honda Civic DX sputtered and died the other day.  It was running fine till she came up to a stop light and the car stalled.  She cranked the engine over and it sputtered a couple of times and that was it, after that it would only turn over.  I've checked into it and it seems to have fuel coming into the carb so I don't think it's the fuel pump.  I would like to check for a spark at the plugs and check the timing belt (maybe it jumped a tooth) and I need some ideas.  Also some advice as to what might be the problem.  The engine is NOT "tech" and it's a single overhead cam set-up.  I have some ideas as to what it might be (i.e. ICM...) but I need pro advice.  Thank You.

Check for spark first.  My bet is a bad coil and ignitor.

Answer
Both are located inside the distributor.  Remove the distributor cap and you will see the coil right there on top and the ignitor has a few wires going into it below the coil.  REmove the two screws that hold the coil on and remove the metal plate that attaches to the back side.  Look at the coil and if it shows signs of being hot (hot spots) its the coil.  ALso remove the spark plugs and see what the gap looks like.  If they are badly worn or if someone has placed any kind of platinum plugs, its probably the coil.  Make sure you replace both of them because if one has failed, the other one isn't too far behind.
