Honda Repair: Engine cuts out, genuine honda, mphs

Question
Rick,  The car is an automatic.  It runs along to about 1800 to 2000 rpms and then drops back to 1500 rpms.  Then it climbs back up to 1800 - 2000 and repeats.  No it does not do this all the time.  I would say 75% of the time.  It does not do it if I am excelerating, only when cruising steadily along.  If I step on the gas to run it up to 40 or 50 mphs for instance, then there is no problem.  Occasionally the engine warning light will come on after it has done it 2 or 3 times.  Thanks for the help.

I have a 1990 Civic hatchback, 3 dr, european specs with 120k miles.  I just bought it so I have no knowledge of it's repair history.  It cuts out while driving between 1500 and 2000 RPMs.  It runs along fine then just drops back to 1500 RPMs while cruising.  If I am excelerating there are no problems.  It runs fine besides that, good exceleration, cruises at 80+ mphs.  It was sitting for about 2 months before I bought it.  Can you help me?

Archie, is the vehicle automatic or standard? When you say it cuts out what do you mean, no pedal response, a bog, a sputter. Does it always happen at 15-2000 RPM and is it always at a higher speed? If on the highway and the vehicle is automatic you could be experiencing torque converter lock-up which would be normal. Get back to me with a little more info, Thanks, RICK

Answer
Archie, it sounds like you may have a lock up problem with the trans. Check your trans fluid level(low fluid could cause lock up problems). Make sure when you check it the vehicle is shut off and on level ground. If any is needed make sure to use genuine HONDA fluid. If it still does it try pulling the code stored(mil light)Maybe there's a short in the lock up circuit? RICK
