Honda Repair: 94 civic starting problems, test light, crank

Question
i have a 94 civic ex with 204K miles.  i have had this problem for 3 months.  what happens is randomly my car will not start.  when i turn the key i just  hear a click.  it will start after 3 - 20 trys.  sometime it seems to help if i leave the key on "on" and then switch to "run" it will start(sometimes). when it does start it starts with no hesitation. the bizare thing is it had this problem 3wks and then it went away for a month and now is back giving me problems almost every time i try to start it.  i have ruled out battery and alternator. thank you for your answer

Answer
Matt, I'm assuming when the car doesn't start you mean it's not cranking? It sounds like a bad starter. Easiest way to confirm this is to check the 2 connections at the starter. The heavy wire attached to the starter comes right from the battery. Make sure it's secure and clean. The othe small wire is controlled by the key in the crank/start position. When the car doesn't crank check for power with a test light at the small wire. If it lights up when someone tries to crank it for you, you have a defective starter and needs to be replaced. Good luck, RICK
