Honda Repair: 1989 Honda accord LXI, valve adjustment, 1989 honda accord

Question
Hi Rick,
I am from Pomona CA & I just purchased an 1989 Honda Accound LXI.  My boyfriend and myself have checked the car out.  I am taking it to a mechanic to have a diagnostic test this weekend.  The car has 280,000 miles on it.  The man I bought it from was selling it for a family friend and he stated he thinks this may be a 2nd engine.  What should I look for or will the test tell all? It runs really well, everything is working but I was thinking about getting a new engine so I can start from scratch.  Its really a transportation car but I want to ensure it doesn't break down.  Please let me know where to start.  Thanks!!!

Answer
Hey there, If the car is running fine, not burning oil, good compression etc. I wouldn't change the engine, maybe have a tune-up performed or do it yourself. I would inspect or replace the spark plugs, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, inspect and replace if necessary the air filter. I would also reccomend a valve adjustment and check the condition of the timing belt and accessory belts and of course an oil change. At the same time check the condition of the transmission oil, maybe its time for a change. If yous have checked it over and all you wanted to know is about the engine I hope this info has helped. If you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask. RICK
