Honda Repair: 88 Accord LXI starts fine and runs bad, pcv valve, vacuum lines

Question
Gene,
The PCV was bad and I have replaced it. I used the water trick on the coil and plug wires. The coil wire really starting snapping with the water, I replaced it once and it did not help. I replace it a second time and it ran good until the engine warmed and it starting snapping again.

After it is warm, it is hard to start and will not run unless I disconnect the vacuum lines from the advance.(Strange) I replaced the advance and there was no change.

After dark I started the car and again it was fine until it warmed, it starting snapping and I could see the spark traveling in the new coil wire.
The spark was contacting with everything the wire was incontact with, metallic, plactic and my fingers.

Any suggestions?

Again, I thank you for your assistance. I finally feel I am making head way on this problem.

When cold why does it start and idle fine until the engine gets hot, it then dies and has a very bad miss.

When cold why is it sometimes hard to start, idles bad with a miss and will not stay running.

The miss is never consistant, it comes and goes with the engine running good between the missing.

I have noticed when the engine is missing, you clearly hear the ignition spark snapping inside the distributor cap. I have replaced the distributor, cap, rotor, plugs, and fuel filter.

Please help, I am so discourages.
Thanks.

Stephen,
Many things could be causing your miss. I will tell you some of the more common problems on your car. Check the PCV valve. They blow out and will cause exactly what you are explaning. Also have the valve adjustment checked. A tight valve will cause a warm rough idle.
While the car is running, get a bottle of water and spray a fine mist on the cap and plug wires. you may have a bad wire. If the car dies when you do this, then you have bad wires or a cracked cap.
Also when you did the cap and rotor, did you see any metal flakes inside the distrubitor? They tend to throw the bearing out on your car, and sends metal through out the distrubitor.
One last thing. I hope you did not use Bosch plugs! They do not work on the Hondas. I have seen so many problems with those!
Start there and let me know if you need more help.

Answer
Stephen,
Well your problem is right in front of you. The spark is your problem. No matter how many times you replace the coil wire, and it still sparks, there is a problem. IT SHOULD NOT SPARK. You need to look at the spark closer. Where is it coming from? Is it really the coil wire? You replaced it twice so that must not be where it is coming from. Check and see if the cap is cracked. Check the other wires. Are they sparking? Once you fix this spark problem, you car will be fixed.
Good luck,
Gene
