Honda Repair: high idle speed, honda accord lx, nessary

Question
I have a 1987 Honda Accord LX with the carberated 1.9 L.  It's an automatic.  When I start the car,m no matter the weather, the motor will idle at around 1,500 to 2,000 RPM.  After a few minutes it some time will idle down to the 750 RPM.  But other times I can drive to work, 45 highway miles, and it is still trying to idle at 1,500 to 2,000 RPM. This happens maybe 3 percent of the time.  On some occations after driving the car and stopping at a store, shutting it off at it's normal idle speed.  When I return 5 minutes later it will idle up at 1,500 RPM.  The car has 140,000 miles on it and I have done the oil and air filter changing, but I have not checked any other controll valves or sensors.  Thank you for your time and help.

Answer
Greg,
Sounds like your choke settings on your carb. need to be readjusted. On that carb., there are 3 settings (or stages) 1st stage is starts when it is very cold and usually runs car around 2500-3000 rpm. After you tap the throttle, it goes down to 2nd stage, around 1500 rpm, and finally 3rd stage which is normal idle. It sounds like you linkage is either gummed up or needs to be readjusted to facoty specs.
Other possible problems are a bad choke coil or bad thermosensor. In any case, this is a feedback carb. These carbs are extremely difficult and complicated to work on. I reccomend you take it to a Honda dealer or someone who really knows these carbs or you can end up spending a lot of un-nessary money on mis-diagnosis.
Good luck
