Hyundai Repair: fuel filter, hyundae, seat bottom

Question
QUESTION: can you tell me where the fuel filter is on my 2009 Hyundae Accent 2009?

ANSWER: The fuel filter is part of the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank.

If I might ask, is there a problem with the car that has led you to ask this question?  I find it odd that someone would need to know the location of the fuel filter on such a new vehicle.

QUESTION: It is time to replace or inspect the fuel filter but I did not know where to find it. I
would like to change myself it needed.

Answer
I checked the owner's manual on this just to see what it said, and it indicated to change the filter every 52,500 miles.  Your filter is a long-life type, and the recommended interval for the normal filters was 52,500 miles also.

It's my opinion that Hyundai simply failed to adjust the maintenance interval to reflect the type of filter being used.  I'd suspect the filter will last longer than the fuel pump, so my recommendation would be to replace the whole fuel pump assembly if you ever have a fuel pump issue, thereby replacing the pump and filter all at the same time.

If you really do wish to replace the filter, you'll need to remove the rear seat bottom and remove the fuel pump through the access panel there.  You'll then need to separate the filter portion from the fuel pump assembly, which is likely to involve a significant amount of unclipping plastic components.  If you feel comfortable with this, feel free to try it yourself.  If not, choose a shop known for mechanics who take car to be sure to do the job properly.  If one of the clips or o-rings is damaged or not reinstalled correctly, it could result in low fuel pressure.  Of course, if the job is done properly, it won't hurt anything except your wallet.
