Hyundai Repair: clutch adjustment/slipping, haynes repair manual, slipping the clutch

Question
The clutch on my 2000 Elantra recently started slipping. The car has only 50,000 miles on it so It seems that maybe an adjustment might cure the problem.  I have a Haynes repair manual that shows that there are two adjustments under the dash that adjust the pedal height and free play. While attempting to make an adjustment I found that the only adjustment that actually works is the free play adjustment on the push rod, and I can't get any noticeable free play from it. I have it adjusted so the clutch engages when the pedal is about three and a half inches from the floor, and the pedal height is five and three quarters. there still seems to be some slippage.  Am I adjusting properly?

Answer
Hi, Dann.  If you have actual free play in the pedal-- it doesn't have to be much, even a millimeter or two is enough-- and the clutch is slipping, there is no adjustment you can make that will cause the clutch to stop slipping.  This is because, if you have free play, the clutch pressure plate is already as fully applied as is possible.  You should expect you'll need to replace the clutch.

As for the pushrod, adjust to the point where you have zero free play (stop adjusting immediately when this occurs), and then adjust one to two turns so you'll have just a little free play.  The one to two turns should be enough to compensate for thermal expansion.
