Hyundai Repair: 2002 santa fe transmission, speedometer needle, accelerator pedal

Question
While accelerating, I heard a Ping then had no power to the transmission. Engine was operating okay. Just no gears .Any Idea as to what may be my problem?

Thanks,
Michael

Answer
Most likely, something has broken inside your transmission, or if you have a 4WD model, you may also have a problem in your transfer case.

Be sure to check the basics first:

Make sure you have the proper amount of fluid in the transmission.

Check to see if an axle may have popped loose.  To do this, place the transmission in drive and depress the accelerator pedal as if you were accelerating.  If you see the speedometer needle move up off zero when you do this, you know the differential is turning.  On a 2WD model, this will indicate the axle has popped out.  On a 4WD model, it could be that or a problem with the transfer case.
