Question
2000 hyundai Accent Issues Car needs a boost to start, idles OK but when trying to drive hesitates and not shifting properly. Battery a year old, replaced alternator. Read a blog of yours to check alternator and cabin fuse and cabin fuse was blown, charged battery and changed fuse and seemed ok. Took out for test drive and a few minutes in lost clock, radio, shifter etc.. as was the case before I changed the fuse. Checked fuse again and it was OK. Is there a common problem with these cars? As it appears to be electrical.

Answer
Check the main fuse in the underhood junction block (or in the box attached to the positive battery terminal if one is there).  If this fuse is blown, the alternator cannot charge the battery and cannot provide power to electrical items in the vehicle.

You can also make some checks with a voltmeter/test lamp.  With the engine off, you should have power at the lug on the alternator.  If you don't, suspect the fuse described above is blown or the cable between the alternator and battery is burned or has an otherwise open circuit.  Unplug the alternator and, with the ignition in the on position, verify you have power in both the wires at in the alternator connector.  If not, the alternator will not charge.  If all these items are okay and the alternator is still not charging at about 13.5V, the alternator is defective.
