Hyundai Repair: 2002 hyundai accent transmission problems, transmission control module tcm, transmission control module

Question
i am having trouble with my transmission it will tend to kick its self out of gear and kick back in as im driving and will eventually put itself in 3rd gear for some dumb reason, i just had the tranny rebuilt but it still is having the same issues, the guy who fixed my transmission says i need an electronic band servo. wtf is that ? and were can i find one?

Answer
There is no electronic band servo in this transmission; the band servo is actuated hydraulically.  In actuality, the servo is comprised of several individual components, but I doubt this is your real problem.

The reason your transmission puts itself in 3rd gear is that the transmission control module (TCM) has recognized a problem that prevents the transmission from functioning properly.  The TCM is programmed such that when this happens, it will request the check engine lamp to be turned on and put the transmission in 3rd gear.

If your transmission was just rebuilt, then the person/shop that rebuilt it needs to redo the job so that the transmission no longer has issues.  If the transmission were properly rebuilt, it should have no problems.  For the record, the servo is indeed part of the transmission.  If it's needed, it should have been included in the rebuild.

As a side note, I'm surprised that a shop would rebuild this transmission to begin with.  In most areas, a shop should be able to purchase a factory rebuilt transmission from the dealer for $1000 or so.
