difficulty in gear shift at first, now does not riverse

Answer
Most things that would cause no reverse are internal in the transmission, requiring replacement or overhaul to repair.  Other things that can cause this:
-- Defective or misadjusted range switch
-- Axle broken or disengaged from transmission
-- Low fluid level


Depending on the answers to the following, I may be able to eliminate some of the possibilities above.
1.  What year is your (E)Lantra?
2.  Does "difficulty in gear shift" indicate a problem with moving the shift lever or a problem with transmission performance?  Please describe with as much detail as possible what this means.
3.  Does the vehicle drive forward normally?  If not, describe what it does that's abnormal.
