Hyundai Repair: Clutch repair, hyundai elantra gt, 2004 hyundai elantra

Question
2004 Hyundai Elantra GT model. Needs new clutch per mechanic. Estimate for repair $1100.00 if he gets the parts. I am trying to purchase the parts myself and found several clutch kits but he says none of those kits have the pilot shaft bearing that he needs. I've tried finding that part on its own, but cant find any listings anywhere. Is that the right name for the part? He will only install new clutch with a new flywheel. Is the flywheel also called a Flexplate? I'll assume its not preferred to purchase a used flywheel? Sorry about all the questions. But can save a lot of money on this repair if I can find these parts on my own. I also have the timing belt to replace and as you know that is also a very expensive job. Any help you can provide as to the exact parts needed will be appreciated.

Answer
Typically, you'll want to replace the clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing (a.k.a. release bearing).  There is no pilot bearing in this vehicle-- the input shaft fits into a hole in the flywheel.  If the clutch has already begun slipping, it's likely you've caused significant heat damage to the flywheel, and in that case, it should be replaced as well.  Not replacing the flywheel will typically not make your clutch not operate, but it may not engage smoothly.  As long as it wasn't somehow damaged (due to droppage or slipping clutch in the car from which it was removed), a used flywheel would probably be okay.

A flywheel and flex plate are not the same.  A flywheel is a heavy flat disc that bolts to the back of the crankshaft.  The clutch assembly then bolts to the flywheel.  A flexplate also bolts to the back of the crankshaft, but has very little weight because it attaches to the heavy torque converter of an automatic transmission.  In short, the flywheel is used in manual transmission cars, while the flex plate is used in automatic transmission cars.
