Hyundai Repair: Hundai 2000 accent, mileage engines, little puff

Question
After sitting at a light take off and there is a little puff of bluish smoke from the exhaust but other than that there is no smoke. What would cause this?

Answer
Typically, this is caused by hardened valve stem seals.  The engine has most vacuum at idle, and this sucks the oil down the valve stem past the seal.  Then, as the accelerator is again applied, the rush of air carries the oil into the cylinder, causing the puff of blue smoke you see.

This is a common issue on high mileage engines, and other than increased emissions and a small increase in oil consumption, there are few significant consequences to this problem.  If this vehicle has enough mileage that you're questioning how long you'll be keeping it, repairing this problem is not cost effective.
