Hyundai Repair: transmission, transmission control module, numerical digits

Question
QUESTION: 01 elantra with 46ooo mi.
sometimes while driving about 30 to 40 mph car will jolt, check engine light goes on and drops into lower gear and stays in that gear no matter how fast or slow i go. if i turn engine off and restart everything goes back to normal. i dont' think i should be having transmission problems with only 46000 mi.any suggestions?

ANSWER: Although you most likely have an issue with either the input or output speed sensor, there are numerous possibilities.

The first step is to retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) from the engine control module (ECM) and transmission control module (TCM).  AAMCO and Auto Zone have advertised they'll read the trouble codes for free.

Once you know the DTCs, report them back here, and I can advise you regarding how best to proceed with diagnosis and/or repair.  The DTCs should be of the form Pxxxx where the x's represent numerical digits.

QUESTION: the code i got at auto zone is p1529

Answer
P1529 stores in the ECM to indicate that the TCM requested the check engine lamp be turned on.  Unfortunately, this code doesn't tell us anything about the nature of the issue with the transmission.  To get this information, the code(s) from the TCM must be retrieved.

It's possible Auto Zone's code reader cannot interrogate the TCM.  If that's the case, you'll probably need to decide whether you'd like to guess at the repairs (which could easily lead to spending unnecessary money) or pay someone with the a code reader or scan tool which will interrogate the TCM to read the trouble codes there.
