Hyundai Repair: funny noises/speedometer, speedometer gear, speedometer cable

for the last two days my car has been making a funny crunching noise and my speedometer doesn't work. it sometimes jumps from 0-60 and all around then settles back at zero. the crunching noise comes from the drivers side of the engine ( i think) and only happens when i am accelerating and the speedometer is struggling. is this strictly a speedometer issue or something much much worse?

Ordinarily, speedometer problems like those you describe are caused by the speedometer gear/sensor assembly or the speedometer cable.  But the fact that you describe a crunching noise when accelerating suggests that you may have a much more serious transmission issue such as a badly worn differential bearing.  Suspecting you're unable to check these things yourself, I'd recommend having the vehicle professionally checked.
