Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Galloper backfiring, hyundai galloper, carbureted vehicles

Question
Hi,

Have a 1999 3.0 auto Galloper II excess.
56,000 km of city driving.
Goes very well, but now slowing down past 60km (rpm 1000)
gives one or two backfires.
Mechanic insists timing is OK. Should I change mechanic ?
Any suggestions >>
thanks,
Rick

Answer
If your mechanic should not figure out the problem, then you should change mechanics.  While I'm not specifically familiar with the Galloper, the statements below are general and most likely apply to your vehicle).

It's quite possible, however, that there is indeed nothing wrong with the ignition timing.  Most vehicles have a system (a fuel cut solenoid on carbureted vehicles or ECM logic on fuel injected vehicles) to turn off fuel on deceleration.  It's the malfunctioning of this system that tends to cause backfire on deceleration.
