Hyundai Repair: 1995 accent check engine light, crank sensor, hyundai accent

Question
I have a 1995 Hyundai accent whose CHECK ENGINE light has been flashing intermittently. At approx. 2000rpm engine will hesitate and the tachometer will start to jump. Have changed spark plugs and wires and problem still persists. What could the problem be?

Answer
The 1995 Accent doesn't have the capability to monitor misfires.  Furthermore, the check engine lamp should be either on or off and should not flash (although it may turn either on or off over the course of driving the vehicle).

Any of a host of things could be the problem.  Since you say the tachometer is jumping, I'd primarily suspect the crank sensor.  But you'll want to start by checking the diagnostic trouble codes first.  The procedure to do this yourself is listed in the shop manual for your car at www.hmaservice.com.  It'll be under the "SCAN TOOL DIAGNOSTICS" link under "MFI Control System."

Once you have the diagnostic trouble codes, you can use the shop manual to find out what they mean, or you can follow-up with them here.  I'll tell you what the codes mean and advise on how to proceed with diagnosis and/or repair.
