Hyundai Repair: engine 1.6 dohc 2003, litre engine, piston rings

Question
hello
i have a hyundai 1.6 dohc 2003

my problem is that i have engine oil coming into my air filter compartment and there is white smoke in the engine chamber which smells like carbon monoxide or exhaust.

my handbrake also becomes hot after i drive the car for a bit... when the car is taken to high rpm then there is white smoke being emmitted from the exhaust.... i have to add 1 litre engine oil every 300-400 kms depending on how i drive... when i open my engine oil cap there is the white smoke coming out.this white smoke increases with acceleration in the chamber itself... this was checked by opening the pipe connecting to the air filter compartment...my guess is that due to this smoke and pressure in the chamber the smoke exits from the air filter compartment carrying some oil with it.

i was getting the code p0444 on the obd reader so i got the purge control checked and fixed. there are no codes in the car now. as you had suggested earlier , the code was due to an electrical problem.
but the smoke is still present and the oil still coming into the air filter compartment...

when we checked on the high scan pro obd which hyundai uses.. it was mentioned there that on idle the purge control should be 0%..and when the car moves the purge control stays directly proportional to the engine load and between 1000-3000 rpm the purge should be 1.5% to 35% ... when we drive the car or raise the rpm now (with the obd connected)the purge control on the obd rises to 10% maximum and then just goes back to 0% even if the rpm is still raised thus not rising again and staying at 0%... there are no codes and all the readings on the obd metre are normal...

If i look at the possibility of serious engine damage, When the oil is expelled from the engine, the engine is about to collapse and cannot take too much speed or has no power, but my car can do a easy 120 km/h, and also that if the piston rings or the pistons are definitely damaged  the oil reaches the air fuel mixture ,the oil is then burnt up with the air fuel mixture thus with a possibility of resulting in black smoke emmision from the exaust.

i have also done a dry vaccum test with a vaccum gauge and the readings on the cylinders where 11,12,13,15 respectively. when consulted with hyundai engineers they said that the normal range is between 10 - 15. So the compression looks ok.

can you also pls tell me what a exaust relief valve is and its function in the engine and where is it located in the engine?

when i start my car from cold for the first time in the day it starts up with extra high rpm which eventually settles down to its normal rpm of abt 700-800rpm.

i am surprised that no one can catch this problem as there are so many cars in the world using the purge cotrol system and my guess is that this is not a problem which occurs often.but unfortunately i have the car which has this problem. pls advise and HELP. Thanking you

Answer
It sounds like your purge valve issue is repaired and the purge control valve is working properly now.

In regard to your engine problem, the more details you give me, the more I think you have a serious engine problem.  Your choices are really rather few:  too much oil, pcv system not working properly, or internal engine problem.  It's quite possible for an engine to burn a large amount of oil and spit out quite a bit of smoke and still otherwise run normally.  This is because there are actually four separate rings on the pistons.  Some of them have the primary function of oil control while others have the primary function of maintaining compression.  Your engine performance (and vacuum readings) don't necessarily indicate that you don't have a problem with the rings, cylinder walls, or pistons.

Depending on the outside temperature and how high the engine idles up, your fast idle may be normal.  It's also possible you have a problem with the throttle position sensor.
