Question
QUESTION: Hi All, any assistance would be greatly apprecaited.
My '02 Accent does not come out of 3rd into 4th gear.
Scan test was done.  P0722 Speed Sensor coode came up.
I changed the Pulse Generator - Problem still there???
Does the code need to be cleared to work properly?
Check engine light never came on.
Thanks for your help!!!!

ANSWER: If your vehicle was produced prior to 10/12/02 (hatchback) or 9/4/02 (sedan), there's a technical service bulletin (TSB) recommending to reprogram the transmission control module (TCM).  The issue is that there's electromagnetic interference in the vehicle speed sensor signal that causes the TCM to think the pulse generator B is giving an erroneous signal.  You'll need to take the car to the dealer, explain the situation, and ask them to perform the reprogramming outlined in TSB 03-40-016.

If you'd like to view this and other TSBs for your vehicle, you can do so at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires Internet Explorer.

QUESTION: Thank-you very much for the Tip.  It is a hatchback and was built prior to 10/12/02. It was built some time on '01.
Any feel for what this type of re-programming may cost?  Also is/could this be a re-occurring problem?
Thanks, Frank!
ANSWER: The reprogramming changes the way the TCM interprets the signal from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) in order to significantly reduce the possibility that the background noise will be interpreted as part of the VSS signal.  If the programming of the TCM was the original issue, then the reprogramming should permanently fix the problem provided that it doesn't arise again due to some other cause (such as a faulty pulse generator of faulty wiring).

I'd expect the reprogramming to be about an hour's labor at whatever the regular hourly rate is at your local dealer.

QUESTION: Thanks again!  So I went into www.hmaservice.com and found
TSB 03-40-016 as well as another on the same topic TSB 02-40-017 "Programming Instructions".  But the problem I am having is that I can't click or access the actual Document, any idea why?
ANSWER: When you click the link, it should highlight in dark blue.  TSB 03-40-016 supersedes 02-40-017, updating the production dates of the vehicles to which the reprogramming applies.

Common problems with the site are:
-- Pop-up blocker preventing displays
-- Adobe SVG Viewer needed to see document

Make sure your pop-up blocker allows pop-ups from the site, and download Adobe SVG Viewer if needed from the link in the site requirements section.

QUESTION: Thank you VERY much for the info and direction that you have provided.  IT's been a great help!
Although, I discovered that the reason my Tranny was not going into 4th was because the wire that attaches to the Over Drive button on the shifter was broken, due to the back and forth motion of the shifter.  It eventually breaks the Grey shielding, then the green, white, and black wires inside.  Once this happens the button does not work nor does your "over drive" gear which is 4th.  I spliced all 3 wires, re-connected them, taped them, and went for a test drive.  Problem Solved!!!!  I'm a little surprised that Hyundai. doesn't understand physics a little better, then again I am happy that it wasn't my tranny that was toast.  Anyhow, thanks again for your help.  I found it to be of great value.

Answer
I guess I misunderstood that the code P0722 returned and that the transmission was commanded into failsafe.  I'm sorry about that.  Glad you found the problem and repaired it.

As long as you don't have a problem with the P0722 returning (which will cause the transmission to go into failsafe-- 3rd gear only), don't worry about the reprogramming.  If the P0722 returns, you'll need to do the reprogramming.
