-----Question-----
best way to remove engine
-----Answer-----
I find the easiest way to remvoe the engine on this vehicle is to remove the hood, remove the pulleys from the front of the engine, and hoist the engine out the top.  You should only need to remove the one mount.  The other three are on the transmission.
-----Answer-----
You'll need to lower the front exhaust or remove the front pipe and remove the aluminum bracket between the engine and transmission (four or five 14mm bolts) and then remove the sheet metal torque converter cover (two 10mm bolts).

Answer
I've made the assumptions that this is a U.S. spec. vehicle with a 2.0 liter beta engine, since this is what came in all 2000 Elantras in the U.S.

This would also mean you have a stamped steel oil pan.  In that case, once you remove the aluminum brace/bracket and the sheet metal torque converter cover, you should have adequate access to the torque converter bolts.

If you have an aluminum oil pan, you probably have a 2001 Elantra or are in a country where the revised engine was introduced prior to the 2001 model year.  In that case, you should be able to access the torque converter bolts through the starter hole.  Once you remove the starter, there will be a small plastic wedge that you can pull out to get the access you need.
