Hyundai Repair: CAM TIMMING MARKS ON A 2002 ACCENT, timming belt, oil pump housing

Question
I broke my timming belt on my 2002 Accent and in the process of installing a rebuilt head but the only book I could find was for A 2001 Elantra and the timming marks are not the same .I need to know the proper position of the cam sprockets and the chain.

Answer
You can access the shop manuals and other service information at www.hmaservice.com.  You'll need to register for a free account, and the site requires Internet Explorer.

The camshaft needs to be set so that the mark on the top center of the front camshaft bearing cap shows through the small hole in the camshaft sprocket.  This will occur when the hole is at 12 O'Clock.  The crankshaft needs to be set to that the dimple on the sprocket aligns with a small tit on the oil pump housing.  I believe this will occur when the dimple is at about 1 O'Clock.

You should anticipate a high likelihood of having to remove the head and replace at least some of the valves.  Chances of valve damage on this engine when a timing belt breaks are very high.
