Hyundai Repair: hyundai excel 97, fuel management system, hyundai excel

Question
We have purchased a 97 hyundai excel for our daughter which now has an intermittent miss whilst driving.  This can happen at any speed and for short periods loss of power then back to normal.  we have checked plugs and leads.  do you have any ideas?

Answer
Plugs and wires cause the vast majority of misfires.  Since you say you've checked them and they're okay, we should probably start with investigating whether the vehicle is actually misfiring.

1.  What is it about the loss of power that makes you believe it's a misfire rather than some other issue causing a lack of power?

2.  Is the check engine lamp on or does it come on when the problem occurs?

3.  Does the problem occur at any particular speeds?

Also, since this isn't a U.S. spec vehicle, please answer the following as best you are able:
4.  What size engine does the vehicle have?
5.  Is the engine carbureted or fuel injected?
6.  Does the fuel management system meet OBD-II requirements?
