Hyundai Repair: parking brake, elantra, period of time

Question
I have a 96 elantra. The parking brake is stuck, the lever operates but the brake does not let go. Is there a fail point on this before I have to get into the drum? I hope so.
Thanks,Scott

Answer
I don't understand what you mean by a fail point Scott, but I'll do my best to help you along.

Often, driving the car will break the shoes loose enough to allow the wheel to turn.  Once the wheel is broken loose, you can usually remove the drum and inspect to determine whether the problem is with the mechanism inside the drum or with the cable.  If the vehicle has been stationary for a long period of time, it's likely that the shoes are stuck to the drum.
